I am a huge fan of the next makeover. I love a bright, colorful makeover as much as the next girl, but sometimes you have to compromise with the other campers in your family. When we were remodeling the Santa Fe, Mr. TypeTwoFun’s only requirement was nothing “too girly.” I skirted the line a little bit–some of my choices were pretty borderline–but I think I managed to put together a makeover that we both can enjoy. I appreciate how tough that struggle can be, which is why I love to see how other campers have managed to find beauty in neutrality.
Kristen and Greg had always wanted to purchase a camper, but couldn’t afford something new. One morning, a friend sent Greg a link to a local community blotter with an ad for a 1999 Jayco Qwest. The couple selling it were moving out of the area, and needed to get rid of it quickly. Greg went over to see it right away, and because it was in such great condition, he bought it on the spot.Kristen tells me she is a little bit crazy when it comes to interior design. Even though the camper would have been perfectly usable in its original condition, it felt dated, so she convinced Greg it needed a remodel. (Sound familiar, ladies? 😉 )Kristen and Greg started the remodel by removing everything and giving the cabinets a good coat of paint. They selected a colored called Campfire Ash (fitting, right?) from Behr. While they had the cabinet doors removed, they also removed the original hardware and gave it all a coat of spray paint in Rustoleum’s Oil Rubbed Bronze. To give the countertops a new look, Kristen and Greg used Rustoleum countertop paint. They originally purchased the paint in Light Ash, but once they got the first coat on, they realized it was too light. They took the paint back to Home Depot and asked them to darken it a bit. They ended up with a color that is as close to Gray Mist as they could get. While they had their painting clothes on, they also gave the ice box and fire extinguisher case a coat of Rustoleum spray paint in Granite. After the painting was complete, Greg installed the Antique Brushed Oak plank vinyl flooring they had selected. They purchased it from the Home Decorators Collection at Home Depot and used two boxes, which were $38/each. Kristen purchased all her curtains at Target. The gray blackout panels on the main windows were $12/each. She bought four panels and cut them to size. For the bunkend curtains, Kristen bought two coordinating panels for $24 and cut them in half to make four panels. Then she clipped the original curtain tabs off the old curtains and attached them to the new panels.Kristen purchased outdoor fabric from JoAnn Fabrics for her cushions. Unfortunately, they didn’t have enough of the gray color in stock, so Kristen bought what they had left and upholstered the bottom cushions with it. She also bought the gray buffalo check fabric to make some coordinating throw pillows. While shopping at TJ Maxx one day, she found a matching striped throw blanket for $14. There was enough fabric in the blanket to upholster both top cushions, which solved her cushion fabric dilemma. Most of the decor items in Kristen’s camper came from her home. She did purchase that lovely wood grain duvet cover from West Elm for a whopping $14.99 (SCORE!), but she already had the rest of the bedding. She purchased a two-pack of outdoor cushions from HomeGoods, to make a seating area out of the long cabinet. Kristen and Greg also decided to remove the stove from their camper, since they always cook outdoors anyway. In its place, Kristen added a little mini bar that she made from an Ikea lazy Susan.
Kristen says it was a bittersweet moment when the camper was finally complete. She had so much fun renovating her PUP that she was sad to be finished, but she was really looking forward to the camping trips ahead. I love the neutral color scheme. Although Kristen and Greg made some major changes, they didn’t do anything that was so drastic it would only appeal to certain tastes. It’s the perfect balance of masculine and feminine, too. Great job, Kristen! Now go enjoy all your hard work! 😉
Happy Camping!

OOH those grey buffalo check pillows are great. That’s the same fabric I’m using for my seat cushions!

I love that you made a seating area out of the long cabinet. I may steal that idea. Great makeover!

‘Love the grays, and the fact that you could change it up with various accent colors if/when desired. Clever ways to get additional seating and counter space!

Love the idea of the Swedish roll-up shades. Finally, a way to have window coverings that aren’t wrinkled!

Love the look of this camper! I wanted to put more fun colors into my camper as well but my husband and two boys didn’t want me to make it to feminine.. I did grey and blues
