My name is Janeth, and my husband, Mike, and I bought a 1996 Coleman Sun Valley pop up for $200 last fall. Our family named her “Sunny.” She was in pretty solid shape inside, but we wanted to modernize her to meet our needs. After looking through Pinterest and finding The Pop Up Princess, I became so excited by the possibilities, that we started our own makeover.
Once the weather got a nicer, we decided to paint the cabinets and walls. Mike primed the entire thing with a primer we had leftover from another project. Then we used Rustoleum spray paint in Smokey Beige from Walmart. We reused the knobs and hardware, and I sprayed painted them with Rustoleum oil bronzed metallic paint. While the paint was drying, we changed the old light bulbs to LED to make the camper brighter at night. My husband thinks it was definitely the best decision he made. (You can read all about switching to LED lights here.)
I love hearing stories like that. I’m sure Janeth and Mike will have fond memories of camping in their little remodeled pop up camper for many years to come. Thanks so much for sharing your makeover with us, Janeth. It looks amazing. 🙂 Is camping a family affair for your family? What camping traditions are you passing on to your kids?
Happy Camping!

Hey! Ours is a 1999 Coleman Sun Valley! I was thinking the layout looked familiar! I love the navy and gold!
Christine says
It looks great!!! I guess agreeing on a color scheme is common, we had the same problem .

What a super cute ‘Sunny’ camper you guys have there! I really like the contrast in the fabrics!
Janeth says
Thank you for featuring Sunny, we enjoyed reading your blog and gathering helpful ideas for our own makeover.

Hi Janeth!! My name is Amanda Doll and I live in PA – my parents sold their sunvalley in the fall of 2015 and your pictures look exactly like theirs. Would you mind telling us where your located or where you bought your pop up? My parents would be SO thrilled someone is loving my childhood pop-up as much as we did!

What type of fabric was used for the bunk curtains and cushions? I am remodeling our popup and am struggling on what type and what colors.
Janeth says
Duck cloth from Jo-Ann fabric, and some remnants that i found at wamart.

Hey there! I’m in the process of doing the same thing but I’m struggling with recovering the L-Shaped cushion. How did you get yours covered to look correctly? Thanks!
Jen eisen says
If you figure out to do them let me know because I want to do mine too. I am putting off the whole remodel because of this. I don’t sew…
Janeth says
Most of it it’s sewing and the skinny parts I pinned in and added liquid stitch, saved my sanity that way.

Janeth, This makeover is absolutely gorgeous!
We just bought a 1996 Coleman Sun Valley. I need help with the cushion configuration for the additional beds at the dinette and sofa. I can’t seem to get the configuration right, either that or I don’t agree with what it was supposed to be.
Amanda says
I have this exact layout, and want to remodel soon. How much fabric did you use for the curtains, valance, and the cushions? Also..how did you get around the funky angle of the side cushions?
Sharina says
Hi! We just finished our flooring and I’m trying to keep the cooler drawer from dragging on it, do you have that problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Nicole says
Hi- I am curious if anyone with a Sun Valley has put in a toilet somewhere or do they just sit in the middle of the floor? Thank you!

in the old pic the canvas over the bunks looks gray or tan. new pic looks white. did you paint or replace the canvas?
Larissa says
That’s just a trick of the light, Angie. 😉 But if you are thinking of replacing your canvas, Bear Creek Canvas is awesome.
Jaci says
Love the look of this, so cute! I was wondering how the painted canvas has held up. I’m really hating the gray color of mine but I’m wondering if the heat and being folded up will be okay long term. Any paint/tips you can suggest will be appreciated.
Larissa says
Janeth didn’t paint her canvas, Jaci, although it may seem like it from the before and after pictures. 🙂 We don’t ever recommend painting your canvas. Besides messing with the waterproofing of the material, it will definitely make folding up the canvas an issue. It can make the fabric more stiff, and it will likely crack and peel in winter cold and become sticky in summer heat. My suggestion would be to find a color scheme that works with the canvas color.

I am also looking for tips on covering the L-shaped corner cushions. Thanks!

How much fabric did it take to reupholster the booth? I can’t find it anywhere and don’t want to come up short.

Totally amazing! I wish I did not have to do mine. I could just switch ya?? Awesome HARD work, Janelle!!
